Now Offering Blood Flow Restricted Training

Improving muscle strength from a sports or workplace injury, recovering more quickly from surgery or lessening arthritic pain just got significantly faster and easier for Louisville residents – thanks to Blood Flow Restricted Training (BFRT), the only FDA-approved treatment that improves patients’ muscular strength during physical therapy sessions, even in the presence of pain and other limiting symptoms.

ProRehab is unveiling the new Blood Flow Restricted Training technology at its Louisville clinic and has three physical therapists on staff who are certified to use and administer BFRT.  For optimal results, physical therapists there recommend that patients participate in three 30-minute sessions/week for a period of 6-8 weeks.

“Symptoms such as pain and stiffness are common road blocks to building strength when recovering from an injury,” explains Daryl Williams, PT, DPT, SCS. “But our new, cutting-edge BFRT technology can help injured athletes, non-athletes, and people of all ages heal more quickly and build strength so they can get back to the activities they love.”

Here’s how it works: BFRT involves the application of a specialized tourniquet system to partially occlude blood flow to the injured limb. Light exercise is then performed for 5-10 minutes. Under this hypoxic (no oxygen) environment, large, fast twitch muscle fibers are recruited. This allows patients to make greater strength gains while lifting lighter loads, thereby reducing the overall stress placed on muscles and joints. BFRT is a proven treatment that allows patients to safely improve strength while recovering from an injury.

“After a hip injury last year and then a slight shoulder injury this past season, BFRT helped me quickly regain muscle strength in both of those areas so that I could recover and then continue competing.  I’d had no subsequent hip or shoulder pain since using the treatment and highly recommend it for anyone recovering from an injury,” says Kelsi Worrell, Olympic Gold Medalist and University of Louisville graduate. ProRehab has also collaborated with athletic trainers and physical therapists at the University of Louisville to help them integrate BFR into their repertoire.
